Keen, as always, to trial and feedback about any new variety of baby leaves from the crops grown by the farmers down on Lower Link Farm at St Mary Bourne, Hampshire. New to the range is Fennel Tops and Sweet Leaves. This leafy bag, as with all bags of mixed leaves are washed only in spring water and are ready to eat. Available from selected branches of Waitrose and other food outlets throughout the country and soon to join the four other varieties online at Ocado RRP £1.40 for 60g bag Note: on purchase keep the item chilled.
The FENNEL TOPS & SWEET LEAVES is a herbaceous mix and has deep, earthy qualities to the taste. All parts of the fennel plant have a pronounced aniseed flavour, the tops are no exception. Fennel marries up very well with oily fish and mackerel in particular. We agree that the recipe suggestion on the back of the pack would really work, and that is to serve as a salad with smoked mackerel, new potatoes, spring onions, extra virgin olive oil, with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt. And one successful, simple dish we tried was to top some toast with grilled mackerel from a tin (natural) and serve this with the fennel mix on the side with a squeeze of lemon. We also served this salad, during our trialing, with chunks of mango and feta cheese, and as an aside to pizza and ravioli as shown in the illustrations below. Typical vitamins per bag are folic acid and Vitamins A and C, so are excellent for healthy eating when used as part of a balanced diet.
Lastly, it is always the intention to convey all information that is required when reviewing a product, that sometimes we forget that readers simply just want to know if something tastes good! In this instance, yes, we can confirm that this is delicious tasting fresh food and even though the flavours are a little more than subtle, we feel confident this mix will appeal to all palettes, testers, unanimous in this conclusion 5/5
