Holiday Inn Leeds – Wakefield – Queen’s Drive Ossett, Wakefield, WF5 9BE…is a 3-star hotel for business and leisure with meeting/event rooms available for holding conferences, board meeting and private functions. The majority of bedrooms are spread over three floors with interconnecting corridors served by a few stairs up and down and a lift.
Location: Situated close to M1, Jct.40, so a little too close to Leeds to be pulling in the punters if that’s the end destination perhaps, but is ideal for those driving up the M1 from the South as this provides an overnight break from the travelling which involves a longer journey to any ongoing Yorkshire destination, and beyond. For horse and greyhound racing enthusiasts for example, Wetherby racecourse is situated 26 miles to the North and The Kinsley Greyhound Stadium is South East of Wakefield, approximately 10 miles away from the hotel. Ideal too for business meetings being so close to the Motorway and with Wakefield Westgate train station being just 2.3 miles away and Wakefield City Centre itself under 3 miles, location is a top scorer for locals and people from further afar alike 10/10
Hotel Condition: Externally, it is what it is, a 1970’s hotel building of different levels that looks dated and a bit ‘harsh’ on the eye (especially in the rain). Internally: surroundings cannot be described as deeply plush. The decoration and furnishings would have been described as modern a few years back, so the faux leather chairs and the light oak/beech wood fittings etc now are quite ordinary. The ambiance is warm and inviting however, lighting is soft and welcoming. Acknowledging that the open plan settings of the restaurant, bar and lounge areas is an awkward space to get right, so these spaces could work better with a clever redesign applied 7/10
Details of room, Cleanliness and Condition: Very Good was our air conditioned twin bed, out on a ‘wing’, to the rear end of the hotel. Reporting that there were no voices overheard, or footfall heard from the corridor. No doors banging. No traffic sounds or car engine noise was evident around us, during the whole stay, so both the TV watching moments and the sleeping hours were very relaxing. The en suite: fitted with a large walk-in shower, toilet and basin fitted with high-end fixtures. Beds are divan beds on castors, probably not that new, but were covered with protectors and sheets were crisp and white. Towels, toiletries: presentable 9/10
Restaurant Service: Very Good Note: We are only commenting on the breakfast self-service. A staff member greeted us on arrival in the dining and outlined the breakfast routine, waiting staff on duty overall we found attentive but not imposing. Food choices consisted of: Traditional English breakfast items, cereals; fruit; yoghurts and toast/with jams and other spreads. Continental style meats and packet ham/chicken slices, plus croissants/bread. The hot food was excellent, food remained warmed through to the centres, so that once plated and transported to the table it was still at the right kind of temperature to enjoy; meat products were of a decent quality. Other cooked food included grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans, eggs scrambled or fried and hash browns. Hygiene practices seemed good overall, one small negative: sauces, ketchup etc. had to be placed over food at the counter at the time of self serving dispensed from full sized bottles that everyone uses. Only other condiments to be seen were set to one side but they looked like they were about ready for binning, so perhaps offer sachets of this kind of thing for hygiene reasons if nothing else? Hot beverages include a multiple choice of different teas, and fruit juices too. The breakfast at this hotel is Recommended 9/10
Front of House Staff: Reception staff are not seated at the front desk at all times; we had to wait a short while to receive attention from the duty receptionists, both on arrival and on departure. The first receptionist we encountered had a friendly personality and was thorough with the information giving and the request offerings. We exchanged just a few, short pleasantries with the second receptionist who we met briefly when checking out. The barman who served us on the Saturday night had a forthright manner but was professional enough in his conduct 9/10
Comments and Observations: Parking spaces are set along the peripheral only close to the hotel entrance, a large car park with plenty of spaces is situated at the rear but this was not evident when we first drove in on the dark, stormy night that it was. Also reporting that the comings and goings of a people at wedding function and the DJ commentary and music from the events room at the rear of the lounge area, was not a spoiler of our own quiet socializing over a drink, but it was overtaking our conversation at times and was quite distracting
