Leading Bath Manufacturer, Carron Bathrooms is TSS Business of the Month for September 2015

Background Falkirk business Carron Bathrooms have a traceable history back to the eighteenth century. *Its iron foundry situated near to the River Carron manufactured defence equipment for the Royal Navy and so received a Royal Charter. During the Industrial Revolution, when pig iron and wrought iron production was at its height, the company saw continued growth. In 1870, new furnaces and offices were built on the Stenhouse Road. For two centuries the company was associated with major civil engineering projects, including its biggest, the supply of iron rings for the first Jarrow-Howden tunnel construction. The Carron Company Ltd have seen demand for their quality iron castings during two world wars and in peace time for defence, public and private sector customers, while also producing domestic products. The first Carron bath, cast iron of course, was manufactured in 1866! *ends* Made in Britain Time and time again, when researching businesses, we learn of British companies (those with long manufacturing histories and having enjoyed established reputations) falling into receivership during the 1980s, because of the new economic policies …

Three from the ArtDeco Celebration Make-Up Collection

for the lips: Magic Fix (£9.10) – A top coat for locking your lipstick firmly in place. Boxed and packaged in a tiny opaque glass bottle, with a screw top, with a small wand brush which remains suspended in the clear solution until all is used up. The liquid has a strong scent which falls somewhere between having a chemical and a natural, sweet fragrance. The brushing is very fine and tickles slightly when applying, the lips tingle and a slight stinging sensation can occur momentarily.  Dries almost immediately.  Having applied the Magic Fix there is no taste evident on the lips, and the lipstick becomes waterproof and smudge-proof and stays put for a fair while even after eating/drinking. Ingredients include Bergamot and Lavender oil to give calming effects and should not be the cause of any excessive drying of the tender skin of the lips  8/10     for nails: Ultra Quick Dry Top Coat (£7.35) – use in a well ventilated room – Application is smooth, with no mess, and dries quickly. The packaging …

Ella Henderson Batiste collaboration

‘As a regular and long term user of Batiste Dry Shampoo, I was thrilled to receive the new ‘Sweet and Seductive’ fragrance in collaboration with Ella Henderson, the face of the new ‘Ready For It’ campaign. As much as I love Batiste, I was not expecting to like this as much as I did, however the fragrance certainly lives up to its name and I personally think it is my favourite out of the collection. I am trying to get out of the habit of washing my hair everyday and after spraying on my hair before bed, the next day I received numerous compliments about how nice my hair was smelling and how good it looked. I found it gave my hair a lot of volume and without any chase of grease, allowing me to skip washing it for two days. ‘Sweet and Seductive’ was also a hit with my daughter and step-daughters who are big Ella Henderson fans. We will definitely be stocking up – well done Batiste!’ A product review by Guest Blogger Amy …

TSS Business of the Month for January 2015 is Clayre & Eef (wholesale business)

Ahead of the UK’s big wholesale gift and home interior trade event of the season the Spring Fair International, we are profiling one of its many exhibitors Clayre & Eef – a manufacturer and wholesaler of home decoration products, based within the Leudal municipal, south eastern Netherlands. If ever there were a company that was a real family affair this is it. Two Dutch brothers took over the business bearing the family name ‘Van Cleef’ from their parents in 1994; back then it was just textile producing. The Van Cleef brothers, along with other relatives, friends and acquaintances worked to grow the wholesaling business into its present capacity of supplying, to trade, a whole range of home decorating items, fashion accessories, fancy goods and more. In 2005, the constriction of the two first names of the mens’ children (pictured right) was changed to the current corporate and brand name ‘Clayre & Eef’. How nice for the children – now grown up! In the main office in Haelen, the Clayre & Eef artwork is hand-drawn and …

TSS Business of the Month for December 2014 is Mira Showers (Kohler Mira Ltd)

Our Business of the Month, Mira Showers (Kohler Mira Ltd) is the company responsible for producing the world’s first thermostatic shower.     The company was first established in London. It formed a base in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in its early days and remains there today, (sites also at Gloucester, Wolverhampton and a factory in Hull, Humberside). The business was privately owned by members of the Walker family who originally manufactured the Leonard shower mixer valves that were used widely in industry, schools and hospitals.   In 1959, the Leonard 722 (one from the company’s original Leonard brand) was introduced. This was the first thermostatic mixing valve designed to control water temperature and flow under UK pressure conditions. After 42 years the Leonard brand was retired and replaced by Mira Thermostatic. The company itself has had a few name changes since the original Walker, Crosweller and Co (est:1921). It became a subsidiary company in 1963 and was bought out in 1974, and in efforts to up the ante perhaps, was sold on three times and now rests …
