Today Feb 04, is #HarryPotterBookNight (a Night of Spells) Schools, libraries, bookshops and Community Centres across the world have organised their own events to mark it. The idea behind things is so to pass on the passion for the Harry Potter series of novels to young readers (those who haven’t yet discovered J.K. Rowling’s famous books), so the books continue to play a big part in popular culture. This is the second Harry Potter Book Night to take place, and there will be other ongoing events and activities to get involved in over the coming months. At the first event a favourite spell vote was launched. Here are the results: With over 2700 votes the Expecto patronum spell took first place followed closely by Accio in second place and Wingardium Leviosa in third. The top ten favourite spells is below. Full of inventiveness and cunning, these famous …

Labyrinth Board Games

Testing this, the Junior Labyrinth Board Game by Ravensburger is, Adam (aged 8), Abigail (aged 5)  and their parents ‘the testers’. Review written and submitted to TSS by mum, Cheryl   “That looks Epic!” cried Adam when we opened the package that arrived, and with some prompting Abigail said it looked “hard but fun“. The game was played 4 times over 2 days. We liked the instruction, ‘the bravest starts first’. Adam shouted up, and started, with me second, Abigail third, and my husband to be last. I read the instructions and Adam took his turn, but by the time it reached Abigail, we realised that to start with she’d need help, so my husband teamed up with her. She still chose her own moves and gained understanding and more independence as the game went on. By the 4th time we played she set it up, and collected 7 tokens before anyone else had sat down to play, which caused much amusement! Adam understood the game quickly, though he took some time to think through …

Robin’s Winter Song by Suzanne Barton ISBN 978-1-4088-5614-8 Published by Bloomsbury in Hardcover – Release date 08 October 2015 RRP £10.99 A Children’s Picture Book (Hardback) Overview: the creatures are busy preparing for winter which is nearly upon them. Robin is curious to know what this scary ‘winter’ person/thing is. He grows to like winter, so when the times comes for wintertime to give up to spring Robin is not scared at all, just excited to meet ‘her’ Comment and Guide: the story moves from autumn, through the winter, to the beginning of spring in 24 pages. Lots of verbs in the text to describe the actions of the creatures. The illustrations are collage like, and so show lots of textural qualities but in a 2D form of course. The colours in the woods are a mix of autumnal shades on a white background (mostly). When winter eventually arrives the colour pallet changes to cool shades of blue and grey, but the lovely reds, oranges and browns of the animals adds a contrasting warmth to …
